🇬🇧 Blue Rock Thrush

🇲🇹 Merill

(Monticola solitarius)

One of the first things that comes to mind to every Maltese person about the Blue Rock Thrush, is probably that it is our National Bird. Before Malta introduced the Euro as its official currency, we had the Maltese Lira and this bird was famously depicted on the 1 Lira Maltija coin.

The male Blue Rock Thrush sports a very vivid blue plumage, whilst the female has a textured brown plumage. It prefers cliffs that can be found mainly in Malta’s coastline and in valleys. Nowadays, it is also being noticed that they are moving further inland and are occasionally found perching and singing from high rise buildings.
