🇬🇧 Spanish Sparrow

🇲🇹 Għasfur tal-Bejt

(Passer hispaniolensis)

In Malta we are very lucky to have such a commonly breeding bird. The Spanish Sparrow is often overlooked but in my opinion the intricacy of the colour and texture they have, make them a very interesting subject, especially the males. On top of that, this species is the perfect example of how nature can adapt to the environments humans sometimes create. They inhabit virtually everywhere in Malta, be it agricultural fields, buildings (where they nest in ventilators and crevices that are large enough) valleys, garigue, woodlands etc.
